Why Does Throne Request Location Permission?

Location permission allows Hands-Free Mode to detect your device using Bluetooth, not to track your location.

Updated over a month ago

When setting up Hands-Free Mode, Throne will ask for permission to access your device’s location. This can feel unexpected, especially since Throne does not track where you are.

This permission is required so your phone can detect your Throne device using Bluetooth.

Why Location Permission Is Required

Hands-Free Mode uses Bluetooth Low Energy to detect when your Throne device is nearby. This allows sessions to start and end automatically without requiring any action in the app.

On both iOS and Android, apps must request location permission in order to scan for Bluetooth devices in the background.

This is a system level requirement set by Apple listing Bluetooth among the signals that can be used to infer location, which is why iOS gates BLE scanning behind location access:

"The crowd-sourced location data gathered by Apple does not personally identify you."

Google calls out in their developer notes that location is required:

"Because discoverable devices might reveal information about the user's location, the device discovery process requires location access."

These requirements apply to all apps that use background Bluetooth scanning, regardless of how the data is used.

What Throne Does And Does Not Do With This Permission

Throne uses this permission only to enable Bluetooth detection for Hands-Free Mode.

  • Throne does not use GPS.

  • Throne does not track your physical location.

Your data remains private and secure.

Throne is designed to capture only what is needed to provide your insights.

How To Enable Or Adjust Location Permission

If you skipped this step during setup or want to update your settings, you can adjust permissions directly on your device.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings

  2. Scroll down and tap Throne

  3. Tap Location

  4. Select Always

On Android

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Apps and select Throne

  3. Tap Permissions, then Location

  4. Select Allow all the time

Why This Matters for Hands-Free Mode

Without location permission, your phone cannot detect your Throne device in the background.

This means Hands-Free Mode will not work reliably unless location permissions have been granted and sessions may not start or end automatically if they are turned off.

In Summary

  • Location permission is required by your phone’s operating system for Bluetooth scanning

  • Throne uses it only to detect your device for Hands-Free Mode

  • Throne does not track, store, or share your location

  • Enabling this permission ensures automatic session detection works as expected
